At High Mountain Medical, we administer Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV) tests to diagnose neuromuscular disorders. These diagnostic tests are often run together to measure the body’s responses to nerve signals and examine your nervous system functionality and other muscular structures. EMG and NCV tests can be used to determine:
- Nerve Damage
- Cause of Nerve Damage
- Neurological or Muscular Problems
- Effectiveness of Treatments
Electromyography
Electromyography (EMG) testing is performed through the use of electrodes. These tiny devices interpret electrical signals that cause your muscles to contract. An electrode takes the form of a small needle and is inserted into the muscle tissue. The electrodes will then record any electrical activity of the nerves, which our specialist interprets to provide an accurate diagnosis.
Nerve Conduction Velocity
Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV) tests are typically performed along with EMG tests. NCV tests involve the use of surface electrodes placed on the skin. One electrode stimulates a response, and the other records. During this test, the electrodes will release small shocks, and the other electrode will record your body’s response to the stimulus.
What Can EMG/NCV Tests Diagnose?
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- Neuropathy
- Herniated Disk Disease
- Muscular Dystrophy
- Guillain-Barre Syndrome
- Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) Disease
- Sciatic Nerve Problems
What Happens During A Neurodiagnostic Test?
If you have an upcoming EMG or NCV test, you may be wondering how you can best prepare yourself for your visit. During your neurodiagnostic test at High Mountain Medical, all metal, including jewelry, will need to be removed before the test, as they can interfere with your results. During the test, you will either be lying down or seated. Some patients may experience minimal discomfort during the test, but you should notify your doctor immediately if you are experiencing any pain. These tests can last between 20 and 90 minutes and are performed on an outpatient basis.
If you need an EMG or NCV test, don’t settle for just any neurologist. At High Mountain Medical, we offer various services for our patients. Be sure to contact High Mountain Medical today to learn more about neurological testing and request an appointment!
